Women of color have been notoriously overlooked in the makeup section. It is one reason OG brands, like MAC and Make Up For Ever, and new kids on block, like Il Makiage and Fenty Beauty, are praised for their exceptionally inclusive range of complexion products.
CoverGirl is 1 brand that's been thinking about women of colour. Back in 2005, the brand launched the Queen collection especially for Black women, and the brand expanded its complexion category to include 40 colors of its TruBlend formula. But now, CoverGirl is catering to underserved complexions in a way that is new. A line of cosmetics for women of colour, introducing Full Spectrum, developed by a team of women.
Global R&D Face Manager of CoverGirl, johanne Richard, informs Refinery29 that developing this line was important to her because she's had her fair share of confusion in the cosmetics aisle. "So a lot of my friends and family have told me stories about mixing foundation shades, so we really wanted to create a collection that addressed the special nuances of skin."
Richard and her staff spent nearly two decades measuring various people of color's skin tones. "During our research we could acquire a better understanding of the undertones of dark skin -- not only to deliver on shades but on finish, also," says Richard. "Most women of colour are put into the same category, but we all have different undertones and our complexions are all really different." The CoverGirl team surveyed women of colour to find out what this group wants, discovering that most search full-coverage complexion products finishes, and colour pigments when choosing out makeup.
